Breed Information
Dexter Cows
The Dexters originated in the South Western region of Ireland and are descended from the cattle of the early Celts. The breed owes its modern appearance to a Mr Dexter who was from Co Tipperary, and he gave them their name too. They were first introduced into England in 1882 and are the smallest British breed of cattle. They come in three colours, most are black, but some are red or dun. Because they are a mountain breed they are extremely hardy and can live outside all year round. They are efficient food converters, meaning that the amount of milk that they produce compared to the amount of food that they eat is very high. They are registered as a rare breed. Most of the cattle on the farm are Dexters.
